Across the Distance

There’s a drawer I never open. It holds a picture I never look at.

It reminds me of a day I hate to remember, but I’ll never forget.

I’d give anything to be like the other girls on campus. Going to parties, flirting with boys, planning for a future. But that’s not me. And hasn’t been since the day my parents died. The only thing that got me through was Griffin. Even though I didn’t have my family, I always had him. Only, now I’m not so sure I do.

It’s not just the eleven hundred miles separating us now that I’m at college. And it’s more than his band finally taking off, and all the gigs and girls suddenly demanding his time. It’s like everything is different—the way we talk, the way we text . . . the way he looks at me and the way his looks make me feel.

Griffin has been the only good thing in my life since that horrific day. I can feel our friendship slipping away—and I’m terrified of what will be left in its place…

  15. Haaaappy book birthday! I so want the cover model’s hair. Love the mix of colors without it looking like too much. If it’s just a trick of the light/seeing through the strands, it’ll be *so* sad. Didn’t get the guts to really start playing with hair color until I’d gotten out of college (before, I’d played with safer ones and had a red go really bad, so red was more of a college thing; never black). Now every 6-8 weeks it changes to a new color. Moving from the unnatural but oh-so-pretty reds into some rich purples 🙂

    Love your song playlist, btw! I ❤ Brave. People threw a fit over it and Katy Perry's Roar, but I think there's enough of a distinction between what's going on to be a non-issue. I look at Sara's song as touching on social anxiety, so I relate to it really well. Katy's is more focused (in my opinion) on how she acts after she starts ignoring jerks. Sara's to me just feels more like "you can get through it," and Katy's is more "look what I did after I got through. Plus, Sara's video's way cuter 😀 Whole thing touches me more. Great soundtrack in general. A book that was inspired by or relates to lots of songs I enjoy is pretty much on the insta-"I know I'll like it" list 🙂

    The plot though, just so I say it specifically, sounds soooo much like what many people go through making that transition from high school to college. Maybe not so much having parents die, but the people that meant so much to you most likely will not be joining up at the same college. And when you have friends that are younger than you, or differences in community/state colleges and universities and the billion other options, so much happens to break those relationships apart. I didn't have much of that, personally. Sounds kinda snobby now, but I knew I wasn't going to stick around where I grew up, wasn't going to college in state, wouldn't likely return to the state for employment. Seemed kind of pointless to actively seek out friends that wouldn't likely be in my life for long (I'd had some *very* bad experiences in middle school and just in general stopped caring about if I'd socialize.) I'd spend my free time on my homework or extra credit work/extra work I'd asked for because I was bored from the slow pacing (5th grade, I worked ahead in math with the teacher's okay and finished the entire textbook early – got me put up a few years in math classes). Or, I'd have a book to devour for fun or a puzzle book to work through. But from what I gather, most people aren't like me 😛 So I like how realistic this story sounds. Very curious about how it plays out.
