OUT OF LINE

I always follow orders. My job, my life, depends on it. I thought this job would be easy, all the rules were made crystal clear, but when I met Carrie Wallington, everything got muddy. She’s a rule I know I shouldn’t break, but damn if I don’t inch closer to the breaking point each time I see her. I’m ready to step out of line. And even worse? I’m living a lie. They say the truth will set you free, but in my case…

The truth will cost me everything.

OUT OF TIME

Being Carrie’s bodyguard was one thing. Being her boyfriend is another. Every day she’s mine is a day the sun shines in my life. Yet our time together is running out. Her father will never think a tattooed Marine will be good enough, so I’ll do whatever it takes to be worthy of her love. But the road will take me away from the girl who makes me feel alive–the girl I can’t live without.

Time only gets us so far…

OUT OF MIND

All I wanted was to be worthy of Carrie. One mission, just one, and I’d be able to give her the future she deserved. Then everything went wrong, leaving me tainted and broken. Carrie wants me to be who I was, but all that’s left is what they made of me. I’m no good for her. No good for anyone like this. I have to figure out how to move forward. Alone.

Sometimes love isn’t enough…

ABOUT ALL BROKE DOWN:

In this second book in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack’s New Adult, Texas-set Rusk University series, which began with All Lined Up, a young woman discovers that you can’t only fight for what you believe in . . . sometimes you have to fight for what you love

Dylan fights for lost causes. Probably because she used to be one.

Environmental issues, civil rights, corrupt corporations, and politicians—you name it, she’s probably been involved in a protest. When her latest cause lands her in jail overnight, she meets Silas Moore. He’s in for a different kind of fighting. And though he’s arrogant and infuriating, she can’t help being fascinated with him. Yet another lost cause.

Football and trouble are the only things that have ever come naturally to Silas. And it’s trouble that lands him in a cell next to do-gooder Dylan. He’s met girls like her before—fixers, he calls them, desperate to heal the damage and make him into their ideal boyfriend. But he doesn’t think he’s broken, and he definitely doesn’t need a girlfriend trying to change him. Until, that is, his anger issues and rash decisions threaten the only thing he really cares about, his spot on the Rusk University football team. Dylan might just be the perfect girl to help.

Because Silas Moore needs some fixing after all.

Finding herself ostracized from her friends and on the receiving end of the bullying she used to dish out, Reagan won’t settle into her new role as social pariah without a fight. Determined to get back in with her friends and reclaim her social status before her mother finds out and sends her to boarding school, Reagan has no choice but to team up with outcast Nolan Letner.

About Tell Me When:

Amber Scott should be enjoying life as a college freshman. She should be pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian. She should be working hard to make sense of her precalculus math class.

She shouldn’t be waking up her college roommate with screaming nightmares. She shouldn’t be flashing back, reliving the three weeks of hell she barely survived last year. And she definitely shouldn’t be spending time with sexy player Marcus Reid.

But engineering student Marcus is the only one keeping Amber from failing her math course, so she grudgingly lets him into her life. She never expects the king of hookups will share his painful past. Or that she’ll tell him her secrets in return, opening up and trusting him in a way she thought she’d never be able to again.

When their fragile future together is threatened by a stalker Amber thought was locked away for good, Marcus is determined to protect her—and Amber is determined to protect Marcus…even if that means pushing him away.

Exclusive Excerpt from LET ME KNOW:

Let-Me-Know-_2

Amber

When I was younger, and believed in Santa, I would wake up at four every Christmas morning. I would then sneak into Michael’s room, and we would tiptoe downstairs to check out the presents Santa had left while we slept. I never had to wake my brother. He was always waiting for me.

Like the little girl I used to be, I wake to find my alarm clock glowing 4:00 a.m. While I’m no longer the girl with the brother eagerly waiting for her, I’m still the girl who sneaks downstairs to peek at her gifts.

And in this case, Marcus.

We haven’t had a chance to be intimate since he arrived less than forty-eight hours ago, beyond small, chaste kisses or hugs. After almost losing him, I’m happy we can have even those. But they haven’t been enough to stop my nightmares.

The only sound greeting me as I creep downstairs is the soft thud of my bare feet against carpeted steps, and the slight rustle of my pink satin robe. Underneath is one of my gifts to Marcus: matching pink satin panties and bra.

The soles of my feet touch the cold tile floor and I pause. Once I’m positive Mom’s mom senses haven’t kicked in, and she’s realized what I’m up to, I tiptoe toward the guest room and inch the door open. The room is dark, other than the faint glow from the Christmas lights next door.

As my eyes adjust to the darkness, I spot Marcus sleeping. I stand in the doorway, wondering how I got so lucky. If I hadn’t been failing my math class last term, I might never have given him a chance. A chance to prove he’s more than the sexed-up guy everyone assumes he is. While I might not be thrilled that so many girls on campus are intimately familiar with his body, a warmth floods through me at the thought that he’s mine.

“Are you planning to stand there staring at me,” Marcus murmurs, “or did you have something else in mind?” His tone is teasing and edged with a desire to do things to my body. Things that will leave me beyond satisfied. My breath hitches and I struggle not to melt away.

Now that you’ve been sufficiently teased, preorder LET ME KNOW right now!! Don’t miss out on this beautiful sequel! And if you haven’t read TELL ME WHEN, purchase it today!

What a Year!

Every writer says that the road to publication is a long one. And indeed it is! But it’s certainly not a journey I’d want to end any time soon!!

One year ago today, I parked myself at the kitchen table and started writing my first solo project. Over the next four months, my fingers raced over the keyboard, putting the story in my head onto the page. After the words were out, I took a short detour and distanced myself from the story for a few of months.

While I left my story behind, I gave a lot of critiques and did some editing for other writers (something I love to do)! In turn, I also gave my story over to some writer friends for some honest feedback. All of the comments and constructive criticism I received was invaluable, which paved my road for Pitch Wars.

By November, my Twitter feed was blowing up with talk about Pitch Wars (you can read about my Pitch Wars experience here). I decided to throw my manuscript into the fray. What did I have to lose? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

December and January went by in a Pitch Wars induced blur! I was rewriting and editing like a mad woman! I am positive my family would agree.

With January coming to a close, my fast-paced journey began to slow down. I had a beautiful manuscript and a solid query letter, so I started sending them out (and even found time to take down the Christmas tree).

So, February became the month of waiting. In keeping with my “road” metaphor, I equate February as being stuck in query traffic: stop and go, stop and go! I sent out a handful of queries and waited. On the morning of February 14th, I woke up and thought about how an offer of representation would be the BEST Valentine’s Day present. That night, I got what I wished for!!! Louise Fury of The Bent Agency emailed, saying she wanted to talk. AHHHH!! I was soooo excited!! At the beginning of March, I was officially an agented writer and a member of #TeamFury!

Now that I’ve pulled off of query road and onto publication highway, my manuscript, THROUGH THE STORM, has come full circle. It is now in Louise’s competent hands, and I couldn’t be more pleased! Her enthusiasm and vision for THROUGH THE STORM is a dream come true.

And today, I’m back at my kitchen table, beginning a new journey as I tell my next story. I’m so excited to see what the next year brings!

No matter where you are in your writing adventure, don’t give up! Enjoy the ride!

World Down Syndrome Day!

World Down syndrome Day

Happy 3-21!

What? You didn’t know today is a holiday? Well, it is!! Today is World Down Syndrome Day!

Around the world today, individuals with Down syndrome are being celebrated! Taken from the World Down Syndrome Day website, “World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.”

Why is March 21st the global awareness day?

Down syndrome is attributed to a partial or full extra copy of the 21st chromosome. Individuals with Down syndrome typically have three chromosomes present on the 21st chromosome. Down syndrome is often referred to as Trisomy 21. Hence, 3-21 (March 21st)!

Let’s Celebrate!

So, in honor of this wonderful day of celebration, I’d like to honor my daughter! She has been a beacon of light in our lives for almost twelve years. Every day, she teaches me something new. My daughter is the hardest worker and she never gives up! Last year, she joined the Special Olympics Gymnastic Team. For six months, she practiced her floor, vault, beam, and bar routines. Come spring, she was ready for the regional competition, where she earned a gold on the uneven bars and a gold all-around medal, silver medals on beam and vault, and a bronze on floor, thus qualifying her for the state games! A couple of months later, she performed just as well at state, bringing home a lot of hardware!

May 2013 089

My Darling’s accomplishments aren’t limited to the gym. She excels at school, she’s a master of technology (she can operate an iPad like nobody’s business), she’s got dance moves, and a razor sharp wit! In one word, she’s AWESOME!

So, Happy World Down Syndrome Day!! If you know someone with DS, give them a high five today!

Let’s celebrate everyone’s uniqueness!!!

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

Pitch Wars Wrap-Up

The top 10 things I learned from Pitch Wars:

10. Twitter friends are great. Twitter is a great place to meet like-minded people. I’ve met so many awesome writers through Pitch Wars and Twitter and I wish them all the luck in the world.

9. Refresh…refresh…refresh… ad nauseam! Sometimes, the refresh button isn’t your friend. Not only was Pitch Wars an intensive writing boot camp, it also provided a lesson on patience. From waiting to find out if my manuscript was chosen for Pitch Wars, to waiting for agents to leave a comment on my entry, to waiting to hear back from the queries I sent out, I could develop an OCD of refreshing my Twitter/Brenda Drake’s Blog/email. But, a better idea would be to use my time wisely. I’m going to get started on my next manuscript while I wait. After all, patience is a virtue. Thank you, Pitch Wars, for making me more virtuous!

8. Save the melodrama for your mama (but, then again, she may not even want to hear it)! Keep things real.

7. Alliteration Affection- Or was it more of an infection? I learned that alliteration doesn’t always work, and more often than not, I wasn’t even aware I was alliterating. Under Lioness’s careful scrutiny, I was made aware of my affinity for alliteration. Now, I’m hyper sensitive to this device and find myself cringing when I come across alliterated words. My thesaurus is my new best friend!

6. You’re not alone! Even though writing is a very solitary endeavor, Pitch Wars turned that notion on its head. With my mentor and my teammates, I knew I had people behind me, cheering me on the whole way through. The talented ladies of The Pride are Sarah L. Blair and Anna Rains.

5. Follow your instincts. Over the course of my Pitch Wars revision journey, I learned to listen to my characters and follow my instincts as a writer. It’s still a developing skill, and I will only continue to get better with time!

4. Constructive criticism is your friend. Personally, I LOVE constructive criticism! I thrive on it. It lights my writing fire! Pitch Wars was a godsend for me. I’ve always wanted someone to pick apart my story—tell me what works, but better yet…tell me what NEEDS work! I WANT to improve my storytelling craft, so I’m not scared when someone tells me a scene or a character isn’t working. Bring on the constructive criticism, I want to learn and improve!

3. Slice ‘n dice, then reattach!  I am not afraid to take my story apart and put it back together again, if that’s what it takes to make it shine. One of my characters didn’t make it through Pitch Wars. After my mentor advised me to cut him out, I willingly complied, leaving my manuscript with gaping holes that needed to be filled. I could have let that intimidate me, but it didn’t. I knew my story would be better in the long run. I listened, cut him out, reduced my word count by approximately 12,000 words, and have a far superior story as a result!

2. Listen to the professionals. All the amazing mentors of Pitch Wars 2013 are publishing professionals. They have found success in the industry, and they know what they’re talking about. I went into Pitch Wars with this mentality. I wanted to learn from my mentor, heed her advice, and with her guidance, revise my story to greatness. I am so grateful for all the help Lady Lioness gave to me, and I will continue to use her advice to grow as a writer. Along those same lines, listen to the agents. It still confounds me that aspiring authors don’t follow an agent’s specific querying guidelines. For the love of all that is holy, LISTEN TO THEM!! Professionals only want to work with those who are professionals as well.

1. Hard work=accomplished dreams. Writing is difficult. But, I know that being a full time author is what I want to be. Late nights, writer’s block, frustrating scenes/characters, endings that aren’t working, the whole novel-writing process is daunting and hard. But, it is something I truly love, and I’m willing to listen to the professionals, listen to my characters, and put in the time and effort that’s needed to produce a compelling story. One day, my hard will pay off, and I will see my stories on a bookstore shelf.

I want to thank Brenda Drake for her hard work and dedication to Pitch Wars. She’s beyond amazing. A big thank you goes out to all the mentors who so generously gave their time to helping aspiring authors realize their dreams. I especially want to thank my mentor, Lady Lioness! She’s wonderful and there aren’t enough “thank yous” in the world I could offer to express my gratitude. Thank you to all the agents who participated in Pitch Wars, and I hope you find some awesome stories (and writers) to represent.

Good luck to the Pitch Wars Class of 2013, may you all find the agent of your dreams! I can’t wait to see your books on the shelves! It’s an honor to be categorized with such an uber talented bunch of up-and-coming authors!!

My Pitch Wars Mentee Bio: I Think We’d Make a Great Team!

My Pitch Wars apps are sent. My prayers are said and all of my digits are crossed. Now, all that’s left to do is wait. And pray some more!

But, thanks to the fabulous Dannie Morin and brilliant Christopher Keelty, I can now put some of that waiting to good use and join in on the PitchWars Mentee Contender Bio Blog Hop.

So without further ado, here is my Pitch Wars Mentee Bio…drum roll please….

By day, I spend my time teaching fourth graders the wonders of science, social studies, math, and the joy of the written word. Usually, any writing assignment I give in class is met with a chorus of cacophonous groaning. Music to a teacher’s ears! But, after two or three drafts (I won’t tell them how many times I revised my manuscripts—it’s best not to scare them) each of my students are lining up to share their story! Awesomesauce!

At the end of the day, I love spending time with my family! I’m married to a wonderful man who is really awesome at grammar! He puts up with my endless questions about commas and I love him for it! I’m a comma killer, so all grammar help is appreciated! And last, but certainly not least, my two precious daughters. They are the reason I write. One day, I hope writing will give me the flexibility to stay home with my girls. I also hope to teach them that hard work and perseverance pay off in the end, and if you want something bad enough, don’t give up.

That’s my philosophy on writing. I’m going to keep writing and revising until I get it right. I LOVE constructive criticism. I LOVE to collaborate. I LOVE it when someone tells me my commas are in the wrong place. But, in the end, I just LOVE to write. I want to tell a story that someone will LOVE to read (and I would LOVE some help with that)!

And just a side note…My birthday is January 24th. I can think of no better gift than to have a sparkling manuscript ready for the agent round in January!!

So, there you have it, me in a nutshell. I teach. I mother. I write. I pray and give God all the glory!

And here’s my #PitchWars #PitchTune…the song that inspired my entire manuscript and it’s intended sequel: 1000 Times by the uber talented Sara Bareilles!

And here’s a picture of Jillian and Griffin (my main characters)…
